In these different points that King has presented he stated his case on the injustice, broken promise, cruel and harsh treatment that the African American has suffered at the hands of many whites. He is working with the screenwriter Charlie Kaufman who also has a similar reputation except slightly more mainstream. Other films that he has released include Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. These films are typical of the independent feel of films that are breaking into mainstream Hollywood cinema. Adaptation is a film about Charlie Kaufman trying to write the screenplay for an adaptation of the book the Orchid thief. No other film has tried to include how the film was written in the actual film. Similarly Being John Malkovich has an unusual plot as it is about the characters finding a portal into the mind of the famous actor, John Malkovich. Also he works regularly with director Spike Jonze who is also well known for making independent films and unusual music videos. Also the film covers a variety of genres without completely fitting into one. It is part drama, romance, comedy and sci-fi. It is also unusual for a Hollywood film to have so many elements of different genres without fitting into one as this means you dont get a set audience. If the film was more sci-fi for example, then fans of Star Wars exc, would have watched the film. Its the same for if the film was more romance or more comedy. However, at many film festival the film won awards for science fiction, for example the Saturn award for best science fiction film at the Academy for science fiction, fantasy and horror films, USA. This suggests that it had enough elements for this not to alienate a science fiction audience too much. This also means that the film is aimed at a very niche audience. Only people who like independent films will enjoy the more complicated parts of the film. You need to concentrate to follow the narrative. If you just watch the film and dont think about it, like you can do with normal Hollywood films, then you wont fully understand. This would make the film less popular because most of the audience may not understand the film and so wouldnt recommend it. This means that people wont watch it due to word of mouth. This isnt always a negative thing though. Niche audiences also tend to be fanatical fans of particular films. For example Star Wars may have fewer fans than a more mainstream Hollywood film but the fans will be more obsessive and so more likely to see the film multiple numbers of times and spend large amounts of money of merchandise. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind didnt create this amount of hype though and so the merchandise sales and box office hits werent improved by fanatical fans. The conflict in the film is internal, i. e. through emotions and the main characters have female characteristics. This would exclude a macho male from the target audience who would want to watch texts from the Order genre, i. e. with male characteristics. This doesnt mean that the film wouldnt appeal to a male audience at all though. Although the film didnt make a huge amount at the box office it only had a small number of screens at each cinema. On its first week it had over 100 screens less then Spiderman 2 had on its first week of release. This doesnt account for the huge gap in the 2 films box office takings but it does mean that the figures cant be taken exactly at face value. This isnt unusual as Spiderman 2 was always going to be a huge blockbuster; it was a guaranteed success, whereas Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was more of a risk. Why would a cinema chose to screen a film where they didnt know whether people would go and watch it, when they could screen another one where they had a guaranteed audience. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a risk because it had an unproven director and production company in big Hollywood films. If they had got the success that Charlie Kaufman had already had then maybe they may have had more screens. Also although they had a proven cast, many of the cast were unproven in their particular roles, such as Jim Carrey in a straight serious role. The film was a low budget film by Hollywood standards in the first place though. Although it only made $34 million at the US box office, it only cost around $30 million to make, so it made $4 million profit even though it wasnt particularly successful. The only reason that they got A list actors/actresses to star in it is that they agreed to take pay cuts because they like the script and wanted to act in it. Although it was cheap to make, a lot of money was spend on publicising the film. As well as T. V adverts and film trailers there was a fake website set up. It was a website for Lacuna Inc, the company that was supposed to do the memory removal in the film. This helps to bring realism to the film, as if the company in the film really exists. It also shows the lengths that they have to go to, when advertising this film. It is very difficult to advertise because the can just try and sell it to a particular audience through its genre, as it doesnt have a specific genre. Because it was difficult to advertise they spent more money on it, but this difficulty could still be a reason for its poor box office success. The lead male in the film is Jim Carrey who is a popular comedy actor with his own successful brand of screen comedy. Although he has played straight roles, like the one in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, before they are few and far between in his career. A mainstream audience therefore would have viewed the film believing it to be a typical Jim Carrey comedy, such as Dumb and Dumber or The Mask. They are more gross out comedies and the laughs are mainly through silly pranks and puns and so a mainstream audience would have been disappointed to find that there arent many laughs, particularly from Carreys character Joel, and the few jokes that there are, are more sophisticated than Carreys usual brand of humour. This disappointment would not necessarily have occurred if there was an actor playing the part of Joel, who was more associated with serious acting roles. Recently Jim Carrey has tried to change his persona, with more serious acting role such as in the Trueman Show but the mainstream audience havent recognised this yet. A niche audience on the other hand would be more open minded and expecting something different then a normal Jim Carrey comedy. The problem is that by it definition a niche audience is only a small group of people and so its the mainstream audience that needs to be convinced. However this seems to suggest the way that Carrey moves his career forward as he changes between his typical extreme comedies and more serious roles. His next film The Number 23 is another film that has been influenced by the independent film scene. Its about a man (Carrey) becomes obsessed with a book that appears to be based on his life but ends with a murder that has yet to happen in real life. This is new for Carrey and the audience havent fully recognised this change yet. He is one of a number of actors at the moment who are aiming to move away from their gross out comedy routes. Another example of this is Will Ferrell whose new film Stranger than Fiction again has an unusual script, very similar to independent film making. Also other Elijah Wood had a big supporting role in the film. Although he was a popular actor at the time, it was mainly for one role, the role of Frodo in Lord of the Rings. This was such a huge success that an audience may have found it difficult to see him outside this role, even though the two characters couldnt be much more different. This would have taken away from the realism of the film. Another reason that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind had little box office success may have been due to the competition that was released at the same time. Big blockbuster sequels like Spiderman 2, Shrek 2 and Kill Bill Vol2, which were all box office successes were all released in the same year (2004) as well as similar niche films like I Heart Huckabees. There has been competition between production companies like Focus Films (who produced Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Scott Rudin Productions (who produced I Heart Huckabees) as they aim to make films for the niche audience who look for originality from films that were once known as art films in mainstream cinema. Where-as Scott Rudin Productions has had success with other huge films such as School of Rock, Zoolander and Team America: World Police, Focus films have very little success pre Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In fact it was only the 6th project they had taken on as a production company. They were also the distributors for the film and have had a lot more success as distributors. This new competition from Focus Films may have lead companies like Scott Rudin Productions to produce niche films to keep their share of the market. This competition could be an important reason why Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind had less success then they may have expected. Also the big blockbuster would have taken away from both the audience and the number of screens that Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind would have got. Unlike other aspects of the media, a film audience doesnt watch just one genre. Although the big blockbusters, such as Spiderman 2 and Shrek 2, were very different films from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, they still take away from its audience. Also the fact that these films were sequels means that an audience would go and watch the films even if they werent very good as they would watch it on the back of the first film. Also the films released at the time werent poor sequels. They all had critical acclaim. Again this would have taken away from Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Minds audience. The film was also released in time for the Oscars. When the release of the film was delayed they decided to delay the release for a full year so that it could be released in time for the next Oscars. This is proof that the film wasnt released to be a box office success but to be a success at awards. The film therefore would have been more suited to the Oscar crowd rather than a cinema audience. You can tell in the film that it was released to win awards. The film is character driven and so will be more likely to win awards for best actor and actress. Also there is a very successful supporting cast who again would be likely to win awards. Most likely though are the director and screenwriter who usually make art films, aiming to win awards at film festivals. This could be a reason why the film was made, for the prestige. A Hollywood studio may expect for the film such as Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind, to not make as much money as a big blockbuster but still agreed to make it. The film was produced by Focus films who are known for making meaningful films rather than films just to make money. This means that they would be able to concentrate on the films quality rather than just what most people would want to see. Companies like Focus films can afford to make films like this on the back of Big Blockbuster films. Focus films had been the distributor for Lost in Translation in the previous year and would have made a lot of money from this. Therefore they may have felt able to make a more high risk film as they already had the money from a previous success. Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind was a risk due to the people involved. Even the well known cast were often in roles that were alien to them such as Jim Carrey in a serious role. Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind wasnt made to break records. It was made for critical success and it achieved this. That means that in that sense the film was a success even though it didnt make much at the box office. The reason that Hollywood may have agreed to make Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind is because didnt take it on for it to be a success and make money. They were counteracting accusations of profiteering. That Hollywood only made films to make individuals and the whole institution rich, and that they didnt mind exploiting people to make this money. By making high quality films like Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind they showed that they could make films where the emphasis was based on the quality of the film rather than the marketability of it. They still aimed to make money from it but it was never going to make as much as a big Blockbuster. Hollywood studios can also afford to make smaller films because of the money that they make from big blockbusters. If a studio is going to make 10 films a year then they wouldnt want to make 10 expensive blockbusters because of the risk that an audience could get bored of them and therefore wouldnt make as much money for the studio. Also the smaller films get prestige for the studio as well as being a good money maker if the film is successful. This is probably why Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind was made. There are many reasons why Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind wasnt as big a success at the box office as the reviews suggested but many of these are due to the fact that the film wasnt conventional, compared to most Hollywood films. First, the League did not sufficiently recognize the value of self determination, human rights, and equal rights of men and women and of nations, large and small, the United Nations Charter has emphasized all these values. Secondly, the League intended to keep peace without outlawing war. But the United Nations has, under Art 2 (4), prohibited war. Thirdly, the League failed to distribute power properly between two chief organs – the General Assembly and the Security Council. But the United Nations has very carefully demarcated power between them. Thus, under Art 24 (1), the â€Å"primary responsibility† of maintenance of peace and order has been entrusted upon the Security Council. Fourthly, all the member-states are to take an oath, under Art 2 (3) that on the call of the Security Council, they must unitedly stand against any aggressor. Fifthly, chapter VI contains several Articles regarding pacific and compulsive settlement of disputes for maintaining peace. Thus, in act of aggression, the Security Council may advice the disputing states to settle the issue peacefully. But, if anyone of them defies it, the Security Council can adopt punitive measures by asking all the member-states to cut off political, diplomatic and economic relations with the ‘culprit’. If this measure too fails, the Security Council may adapt military measures by sea, air and land-forces and all the member states are bound to provide the UN-army necessary troops, material and passages in order to continue military operations. For conducting such operations, Art 47 (1) has provided for the appointment of a Military Staff Committee. But, as a matter of fact, the United Nations and the Security Council have failed to serve the purpose as desired by the makers. It is true that, on few occasions, like the Korea-crisis, the UN was able to take action for securing peace. When, in 1950, North Korea, strengthened by the Chinese support, attacked South Korea by crossing the 38 degree parallel, the UN took joint action in order to establish peace and justice by saving South Korea. As Eichelberger opines, â€Å"Korea presents a clear example of United Nations’ application of collective security† (Eichelberger 20). But, on many other occasions, it has failed to serve its purpose and, hence, peace has been threatened on various situations. For example, the UN has failed to prevent America from taking action in Vietnam, or to protect India in 1962 from Chinese aggression, or to prevent Soviet Russia from interfering in the affair of Afghanistan. In short, on various occasions, his weakness has been discernible, because the Big Powers have often defied the United Nation by violating their pledge. Thus, the chief reason of the failure of the United Nations is the conflicting interests of the Big Powers. For this reason, Clement observes, â€Å"The very name United Nations is a misnomer and, hence, may be called disunited nations† (Clement 483). Particularly, after the end of Second World War, the USA and Soviet Russia, the erstwhile partners, drifted apart and became strong enemies. Though Britain and France joined the American camp, communist China sided with the Soviet Russia. Thus, the major powers have been divided into two contending camps. Moreover, even the members of the same camp have developed mutual rivalry and distance. These conflicting interests have been reflected inside the United Nations. For this reason, on each occasion, they pursued different policies both within and outside the United Nations. For example, though it is said that the United Nations’ army saved South Korea in 1950, only fifteen nations took part in the military operation – some states like Soviet Russia opposed it and some others remained neutral. Such differences have materially weakened the UN. Moreover, the Soviet Veto paralyzed the Security Council from taking actions in Korea and hence, the General Assembly, by adopting the â€Å"Uniting for Peace Resolution† adapted the decision of taking military action. As Nicolas observes, â€Å"The failure of the Security Council to function as planned threw the Assembly into an unintended prominence† (Nicolas 72). Moreover, as pointed out earlier, the Charter intended that the Security Council can take action against the villain of peace. As Godspeed opines, â€Å"The Council is free to utilize any technique or procedure or combination of methods or which might prove useful†. But often the maintenance of peace requires military action. But through the Charter speaks of a Military Staff Committee, it has not yet been set up due to Big power-differences. When the Europeans established colonies in the New World, they sought to convert the Indians way of civilization. Their obsession was to spread Christianity and their culture throughout all of the colonies including the Indian villages. Some Indian people accepted these traditions because they felt as if they had no where else to turn. When the settlers invaded the new land they brought with them many diseases which wiped out many Indian villages and tribes. The Indians also had a hard time excepting the invasions on new territories, which led to many wars. This resulted in a large decrease of the Indian population, so some Indians turned to Cristianity and other European traditions. On the otherhand, many Indians insisted that European beliefs should exist only amongst themselves. They had no business trying to introduce a new religion when the Indian's traditions have been practiced for years. The Indians during this time were forced to accept the Europeans establishing new territories, even if they did not belong to them. As the Indian populations continued to decrease, some Indians intermarried with the Europeans and even the Africans to try and boost the population once again. This of course produced mixed children who were confused and could not decide which culture they would accept. This mix of people changed the ways of living for the Native Americans as well as the Europeans throughout early America. It is obvious to me that land was the largest reason for war among the Indians and the Europeans. It was simple: the Indians did not want to give up their land that they had claimed for so many years to a bunch of irrogant settlers who take what ever they want. The English felt that God had granted them the land and the Indians should be removed. However, the Native Americans also wanted something from the new colonists, trade. The American Indians were great hunters who collected many furs that were valuable trade products. After time some Indian tribes grew in debt with the settlers and the only way they could pay their debts is by giving them land. That is where the Europeans and the Indian's attitudes differ over land. The Indians were willing to sometimes negotiate about certain territories, where most of the Europeans were going to take the land whether the Indians were going to cooperate or not. Battles often broke out when larger Indian tribes felt they could fight for their land. Sometimes they were able to defeat the English in battles, but most of the time they were out numbered. Euphemisms are everywhere in today’s society. They are a daily accessory used in today’s language and are such a normalcy that one does not notice them as strange. For hundreds of years people have used language to persuade people or even nations. With the more advanced society gets so does the language and thus this persuasion gets even more convincing. Many novels show examples of euphemisms. Among those novels includes 1984 by George Orwell. Euphemisms can range from being used in politics to media campaigns to one’s own home. Also, they can be used for multiple purposes such as good or evil. Euphemisms usually distort the truth and mislead although some are motivated by kindness (â€Å"Making Murder Respectable†). â€Å"Euphemisms are coded expressions that we use when whatever we are referring to is considered inappropriate for the circumstances or when we are embarrassed or uncomfortable with the literal version. As one might expect, many euphemisms relate to sex or death† (â€Å"Euphemisms†). There have been multiple arguments that euphemisms help make people more sensitive and politically correct while others say it hinders and clouds the language, diverting people’s true meaning. Euphemisms can either be bad or good but it is important to know when and also where to draw the line in using this language. In Orwell’s novel 1984 euphemisms is so prevalent and the language used in that book is so distorted, at first, from what today’s society uses. Then, as a longer look is taken there are connections made between the language of today and the language that the government in book created. In 1984, there are two languages; Oldspeak and Newspeak. Newspeak is the language that the government wants to be the only source of communication. They have altered Oldspeak into this new language and made it very simple and small. This helps guarantee that people will not b e able to communicate any elaborate ideas that could hurt the government. Along with shortening the language they have eliminated words that have a bad connotation and replaced them with words that sound â€Å"happier† just with rules of usage to imply they are bad (Orwell). This is a prime example of euphemisms are how it can be taken to extremes. Within the book there are specific examples such as The Ministry of Truth, which is a section of the government that makes sure that no truth is actually revealed and is based upon lies (Orwell). All of the euphemisms in the book are used to control people without them being aware what is actually happening. In today’s society euphemisms are used but they do not always have an underlying goal of evil. This language technique is so commonly used that is does not seem strange or manipulative. People who believe euphemisms or politically correct language are good tend think that they provide many virtues. Two of them are that they help reduce the social acceptability of using offensive terms and that they discourage the reflexive use of words that import a negative stereotype, thereby promoting conscious thinking about how to describe others fairly on their merits (O’Neill). Although this seems like a pleasant idea eventually the words chosen to soften the subject will still mean the same thing and eventually become just as offensive. A bully who used to call a kid retarded is still going to hurt his feelings when he calls him differently abled with a harsh tone (O’Neill). Just as calling a woman big boned opposed to fat will still make her upset if seemed to be used in a negative connotation. Not only are euphemisms used in America but also around the world included China, Japan, Egypt and Russia. Oral sex is referred to as â€Å"playing the bamboo flute† in Japanese. A prostitute accosting a client on the streets of Cairo will ask â€Å"Fi hadd bitaghsal hudoumak† which literally means, â€Å"Do you have someone to wash your clothes† (Making Murder Respectable). This proves that euphemisms have been around a long time and are not something new.Orwell did mention that euphemisms can be sneaky and coercive while cloaking a decision’s unpleasant results. This is exampled in news about war when soldiers or just civilians have died and it is referred to as â€Å"collateral damage† (Making Murder Respectable). Many of the characters in ‘Of Mice and Men’ have dreams. What are their dreams and how near are any of them to achieving what they want? ‘Of Mice and Men’, written by John Steinbeck is a classic novel set in a ranch town in Salinas Valley, California. The novel may have been set here as a result of most of Steinbeck’s childhood being spent on his father’s farmland. His descriptions of the setting will have been aided by his first hand experience of the ranches of the area. The novel itself documents the lives of Lennie Small and George Milton. With Lennie being mentally challenged he has the psychological capabilities of a five year old. This means he has to be cared for by George because he acts childish and irresponsibly. For this reason, he often causes commotion within the ranch he is working. On many occasions disruption has occurred and occurs, George and Lennie are forced to leave their current ranch and start again at a new one. As they are always moving around, they never have a secure job and are always staying in temporary accommodation. With each time they move to a different ranch they dream more and more of having their own piece of land where they can be their own bosses and live off the crops they grow. This is shown by this quote, â€Å"†¦and we can live off the fatta the lan'† said by George. This is only one of the many dreams that feature in ‘Of Mice and Men’, however not one of the dreams featured in this novel are achieved. This reflected the harsh reality of the ‘Great Depression’ and the racial prejudice in society at the time. Steinbeck set ‘Of Mice and Men’ during the ‘Great Depression’, in the late 1920’s and the 1930’s. Many migrants came to California, from other parts of the world looking for work as America was seen as the ‘Land of Opportunity’. This glimpse of hope inspired many Europeans to emigrate as Europe, at the time, was overcrowded and disease ridden. America was believed to provide cheap land and no rigid class structure existed. These characteristics gave Europeans the chance of a completely different way of life to what they were used to. In 1929, America entered a prolonged period of economic deprivation due to the collapse of the New York stock exchange, ‘The Wall Street Crash’. Following ‘The Wall Street Crash’, many Americans who had invested great deals of money into stocks and shares lost almost all of their investments. In some cases, people would have lost their houses and life savings. During ‘The Great Depression’, failed businesses and long-term unemployment were of the norm. The hopes of those immigrants, who came to America looking for a new life, were dashed by this tragic event. America was certainly not the ‘Land of Opportunity’. George and Lennie travelled from ranch to ranch together. This was unusual as most ranch workers would only usually work at one ranch for no longer than a month or two. They would literally not have the time for friendship. This was one of the reasons that the average workers dream was for some sort of companionship. The fact that George and Lennie had travelled together so long is significant as they lived the dream of so many other workers. It would give them the chance of having an alternative dream, one of owning their own land on which they could live off. When travelling from ranch to ranch workers could not carry many possessions and so had nothing to show for their years of working. They would work and work but not really achieve much. They would spend the money they earned and then earn some more and repeat. This is illustrated in the quote, â€Å"..work up a stake and blow the stake†. A dream would be important as it would give a worker something to work towards instead of working with no real direction in their life. Many of the characters in the novel have dreams. The dream is a form of escape from reality of life. As previously stated, George and Lennie’s dream is to have a piece of land that they can call their own, tend it, grow crops and raise animals. However, Lennie specifically dreams of caring for rabbits. This shows his immaturity. He says, â€Å"†¦An’ have rabbits!† George is always repeating this ‘dream’ to Lennie. When he does depict the dream to Lennie, he uses exaggerative language and gets involved in the dream almost as much as Lennie. Both George and Lennie become excited when the dream is recalled. They swear, â€Å"†¦We’ll just say the hell with going to work†¦Ã¢â‚¬  , animating their eagerness to fulfil their dream. George and Lennie’s dream eventually fails. This is for a number of reasons. It is mainly because Lennie is such a burden to George. Because of Lennie’s mental incapability, he has no idea that he is making George’s life miserable. George says, â€Å"Course Lennie’s a God damn nuisance most of the time, but you get used to goin’ around with a guy an’ you can’t get rid of him† George is being held back by Lennie as they are constantly forced to change jobs, because of situations the Lennie gets them in to and therefore they can’t stay in work long enough to build up any sort of savings. The result of this is that they can not save up the money to achieve the ‘dream’. Lennie has limited social skills and so does not know how to interact with people. Instead, he finds comfort in touching things and is too tactile. This causes trouble as Lennie often touches women’s clothes and is misunderstood and seen to be abusive. For this reason, George has to keep a constant eye on Lennie. When Candy makes the proposal of entering their ‘dream’ in exchange for three hundred dollars, George suddenly sees some possibility of the ‘dream’ succeeding. Before, he had merely used the ‘dream’ as a pacifier for Lennie and had lulled himself into believing that it may happen so that he could continue bringing hope to Lennie. I think that sub-consciously he always knew that the ‘dream’ would never be a reality. With Candy’s financial input, the ‘dream’ could realistically be achieved within the month. However, an abrupt end to their hopes arrives. Lennie, in his childlike way, cannot conceive of the line where stroking stops and hurting begins in terms of petting, and he ends up accidently killing two animals by petting them violently. Most horrifically, at the climax of the story, he kills Curly’s wife in the same way. The fact that he killed her was the final blow to the ‘dream’. â€Å"I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we’d never do her†, George says as he realizes the dream is inevitable. Lennie was inevitably going to be hunted down and shot on site. George, who is forced to join the manhunt for Lennie, decides that the kindest way out for both him and Lennie is to kill him when he finds him. He does this by luring Lennie into a false state of trust by reciting their ‘dream’ to him one last time. This sends Lennie off into death with his dream in his head. You can argue in some way Lennie has achieved his dream. Curly’s wife has a dream common to the period and today. She believes that she has the talent to become a Hollywood actress. She was convinced of this as when she was younger; she acquainted herself with a Hollywood director who deemed her suitable to be an actress in the ‘movies’. This is shown in a quote taken from a passage spoken by Curly’s wife, â€Å"An’ I coulda sat in them big hotels, an’ had pitchers took of me†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦..An’ all them nice clothes they wear. Because this guy said I was a natural.† This ‘guy’ told her she would receive a letter from him explaining where to meet to develop her acting career. Her explanation of why she didn’t become an actress is idealistic at best. She believed that her mother stole that letter. However, this is an optimistic justification. It just so happens that shortly after Curley’s wife was given the hope of becoming an actress, she met Curley. When she realised that her dream of becoming an actress was truly over, she decided to marry Curley. She may have done this as, at the time, it was very difficult for a woman to get a job and live on her own. The main profession of women then was housewife. Most women would marry a modest worker but marrying a rich man who owned a ranch was a bonus. Life would be easy for Curley’s wife as she would not have to ‘lift a finger’. As there was such discrimination towards women, Curley’s wife found herself being ignored by the men on the ranch. She was not paid much attention by Curley and was seen by him as more of a trophy than a wife. These are the main reasons that Curley’s wife is not happy. She openly expresses that she does not even love Curley. â€Å"I don’t like Curley†. She regrets that she married him in the first place. She was not able to speak to anyone during the day as all of the men were out on the fields working. This causes her to be extremely lonely. At any chance she can she will speak to someone. When she speaks to Lennie in the barn, she says, â€Å"Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.† This shows that she craves friendship. She is often prying on the men just looking for someone to talk to. She justifies this by saying to Slim â€Å"Hi, good lookin’. I’m tryin’ to find Curley, Slim.† The fact that she does not even have a name and is instead referred to as Curley’s wife shows her status on the ranch. It shows that she is so insignificant that she is not even deemed important enough to warrant a real name. She is looked down on and shown no respect by most of the men on the ranch. She also has the dream to be treated as equal to the men on the ranch. This is similar to Crooks’ dream. He just wants to be accepted by everyone else on the ranch. However, both Crooks and Curley’s wife have similar dreams which would lead you to think that they would sympathise with each other. The reality is quite opposite. Curley’s wife approaches Crooks in an aggressive manor and speaks to him in a demoralising way. She says, â€Å"Well you keep your place, then Nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny!† She perhaps speaks to Crooks with no respect as he is the only person on the ranch over whom she has a higher status. Crooks and Candy try to enter George and Lennie’s dream. They both do this for their own reasons. Candy is worried about his future on the ranch. He believes that is nearing the point of becoming useless to the ranch owner. He needs some security so that when he does become of no use, he can settle down somewhere. Crooks feels socially isolated and needs to go somewhere that he will be treated as an equal. George, Lennie and Candy do not discriminate against Crooks as much as most. This is the reason that he would feel comfortable living in a house with them. Candy, when he enters the dream, provides financial power. He has three hundred dollars that he is willing to invest in the dream. When he first tries to join the dream, George responds in a negative and coy way. He says â€Å"You know a place like that?† [Candy] â€Å"S’pose I do? What’s that to you?† [George]. However, when George considers Candy’s proposition, he starts to think that the dream may actually become a reality. Candy is afraid that if he does not get somewhere that he can retire to, he may have no one to care for him. Eventually he will be seen of no use and disposed of, much like his dog. Crooks joins the dream as he feels he needs a ‘shelter from society’, somewhere that he is accepted for the person that he is and not judged by his skin colour or his disability. Crooks has no status and is treated with no respect on the ranch. He is frustrated with all of the racism directed towards him. He says, â€Å"If I say something, why, it’s just a nigger saying it†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Crooks had a taste of equality when he was a child. He was accepted by white children and has perhaps not accepted the fact that he is now a social outcast. He says,† The white kids come to play at our place, an’ sometimes I went to play with them, and some of them was pretty nice† He remembers what it was like to be an equal and wants to experience that feeling again. This is one of the reasons the Crooks joins the dream. Candy will soon be too old and frail to keep his job at the ranch. The fact that he only has one hand means that his job opportunities are very limited. He, much like Crooks, has no one in his life. He just watches workers come and go from the ranch. He would have somewhere to belong if he joined the dream. This is a very important psychologically as having a ‘place to call home’ can give Candy a reason to carry on living. All of these characters have dreams and their dreams are important to them. They all give their character some sort of goal to aim for and a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. I believe Steinbeck is trying to make a point by including all of these dreams. I think he is trying to say that without dreams, we are all lost in our lives. We all need some sort of dream to keep us motivated. I think the novel was written to show the stranglehold that the ‘Great Depression’ had on America in the 1930’s. It also shows how hard the life of an itinerant worker was. ‘Of Mice and Men’ was very a descriptive and informative book. It made me realise that dreams, however small or big, are vital in life.

Comprehensive Review of the Star Math Online Assessment STAR Math is an online assessment program developed by Renaissance Learning for students in grades one through 12. The program assesses 49 sets of math skills in 11 domains for grades one through eight and  44 sets of math skills in 21 domains for grades nine through 12 to determine a student’s overall math achievement. Areas Covered The first- through eighth-grade domains include counting and cardinality, ratios and proportional relationships, operations and algebraic thinking, the number system, geometry, measurement and data, expressions and equations, numbers and operations in base 10, fractions, statistics and probability, and functions. The 21 ninth- through 12th-grade domains are similar but much more intensive and rigorous. There are 558 total grade-specific skills that STAR Math tests. The program is designed to provide teachers with individual student data quickly and accurately. It typically takes a student 15 to 20 minutes to complete an assessment, and reports are available immediately. The test begins with three practice questions designed to ensure that the student knows how to use the system. The test itself consists of 34 math questions varying by grade level across those four domains.   Features If you have Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, or any of the other STAR assessments, you only have to complete the setup one time. Adding students and building classes is quick and easy. You can add a class of 20 students and have them ready to be assessed in about 15 minutes. STAR Math provides teachers with the appropriate library that each student should be enrolled in for the Accelerated Math program. Students who work in the Accelerated Math program should see significant growth in the STAR Math score. Using the Program The STAR Math assessment can be given on any computer or tablet. Students have two choices when answering the multiple-choice style questions. They can use their mouse and click on the correct choice, or they can use the A, B, C, D keys that correlate to the correct answer. Students are not locked into their answer until they click Next or push the Enter key. Each question is on a three-minute timer. When a student has 15 seconds remaining, a small clock will begin to flash at the top of the screen indicating that time is about to expire for that question.   The program includes a screening-and-progress monitor tool that allows teachers to set goals and monitor a student’s progress throughout the year. This feature allows teachers to decide quickly and accurately whether they need to change their approach with a particular student or continue doing what they are doing. All of this connects to the theme of the book. Orwell made the novel to show people what would happen in the future, or 1984, if the west turned into a totalitarianism government.
